SCHOLARSHIP FOR ONE STUDENT

DON BOSCO in Sihanoukville has reached its 13th year of educational service to poor youth. So far over 1,600 students have been trained in different skills. Over 90% of them have a job. This gives a good contribution to the reconstruction of Cambodia after the recent sad events marked by genocide and war. The priority in enrolling students applying to study in DON BOSCO school is given to boys and girls coming from extremely poor families, orphans, and families with many children. The selection is made by a careful interview of the candidates followed by an entrance examination.

When a student is accepted the only financial contribution we request is the equivalent of 60 € / year paid in 2 terms (30 €/ term). The students who are boarders will have to contribute another 305 € / term for food and lodge costs. This small contribution for food costs, it is not a school fee but to let the student’s family feel responsible in contributing for the education of their children. Students receive free meals every day. Nevertheless even this little money for some families it is a lot, especially when the family is numerous, or the student is orphan and some relative has to support his/her education.

Following Don Bosco’s tradition, we would like to help these kinds of kids to prepare themselves for a job. The best way is to offer them to attend a professional training course in some skill suitable that the candidate likes more. In order to answer the increasing demand in Tourism and Hospitality sector, DON BOSCO has started a new section by opening, in February 2007, the DON BOSCO HOTEL SCHOOL.

This academic year 2012-13, the hotel school population is of 146 students of whom 56 boys and 90 girls. 29 male and 50 female students are boarders; the remaining 63 are day students. Most of them come from far away provinces of Cambodia and need a place to stay. The more fortunate are the day-students who have some relatives living in Sihanouk Ville, and can stay with them. The rest has to rent a corner of a room somewhere near the hotel school. Usually students share a room living 5-6 of them in a small room.

Life becomes very hard when needs arise during the school year. They have to cook their own food, wash their clothes and cover the costs of transportation. Other unforeseen always come along the way somehow. In order to help our students to accomplish their training course in Hotel School, I would like to request support to this project. The aim is to find a sponsor for each of our students. The help we will provide will consist in:

  • cash disbursed to student: 8 € / month to day-students, 4 €/month to boarders.
  • one meal/day for day-students, ( value of 15 €/month/1 meal)
  • 3 meals/day to boarders. ( value of 45 €/month/3 meals)
  • costs for medical care, boarding lodge, technical education, and unforeseen.

The amount needed is 240 € / year / student. Students are attending a 2-years course. I take this opportunity to thank you all who want to join us in the delicate task of education to Cambodian unprivileged youth.
