CATCH ME!

In the last few days an uncommon phenomenon occurred in the main beaches around town: the invasion by tons of a sort of krill, (small shrimps) that Khmers call “gkhee” and it is used to produce the shrimp paste you can see in many markets in South East Asia.

The event was not uncommon for its seasonal timing, it was uncommon for the quantities involved, a real bonanza, this year, local fishermen said.

The ghkee shrimps are captured by scores of locals, families with kids, fishermen and lot of curious guys roam around. They use stretcher-sized and shaped nets to catch the approaching krill.

As the krill approaches the shores, it becomes an attraction for predators, which are trapped by skilled fishermen using circling nets to catch the fishes running after the shrimps.

A not-to-miss show!
